Independent candidate for Dhaka-9 constituency Dr. Tasnim Zara has been allotted the 'football' symbol of her choice in the upcoming 13th National Parliament election. The issue of allocating the symbol was confirmed from the office of the Returning Officer on Wednesday (January 21) morning.
Nomination restored and symbol selection
Earlier, the Returning Officer had cancelled her nomination paper after scrutiny on January 3. However, after appealing to the Election Commission (EC), her candidacy was declared valid through a hearing on January 10. Immediately after regaining her candidacy, she applied for the 'football' marker to contest the election.
Challenge as an independent candidate
Dr. Tasnim Zara is the only independent candidate among the 12 candidates contesting Dhaka-9 constituency. The remaining 11 candidates are nominated by different political parties. In a reaction after receiving the symbol, Dr. Zara said:
"Our election campaign will be based on the kind of transparency and accountability politics we want to see. I seek the blessings and support of the voters of my area."
Political context
Doctor and popular content creator Dr. Tasneem Zara earlier served as the senior joint member secretary of the 'National Citizen Party' (NCP). However, she later resigned from the party and decided to contest the elections as an independent candidate. She took the help of 'crowd funding' or public donations to finance her election campaign, which has created a lot of discussion in political circles.
She will now be able to officially start campaigning in her constituency with the allocation of symbols.
