National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has alleged that the recent attack on Dhaka-8 parliamentary seat candidate Nasiruddin Patwary was carried out on the direct instructions of senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas, with the consent of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.Nahid Islam made the allegations while speaking at an emergency press conference held in the capital on Tuesday. Describing the incident as politically motivated, he claimed the attack was part of a broader attempt to intimidate opposition candidates ahead of the upcoming national election.“This was not an isolated incident. The attack on our candidate was carried out following political instructions, which reflects a dangerous culture of intolerance,” Nahid Islam said.
According to NCP leaders, Nasiruddin Patwary was targeted while carrying out election-related activities in the Dhaka-8 constituency. Although details of the attack are still emerging, party officials claim the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of candidates and the fairness of the electoral environment.
Nahid Islam further warned that such incidents could undermine democratic practices if not addressed promptly.“If cndidates are attacked simply for participating in the democratic process, it sends a frightening message. Free and fairelections cannot be ensured under an atmosphere of fear,” he added.
The NCP convener also urged the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies to conduct a neutral and transparent investigation into the incident and to take immediate steps to ensure security for all candidates, regardless of party affiliation.
As of the time of filing this report, BNP leaders have not officially responded to the allegations made by the NCP. Attempts to reach Mirza Abbas and Tarique Rahman for comments were unsuccessful.
Political analysts note that tensions among rival parties have intensified in recent weeks, with multiple reports of clashes and confrontations across various constituencies. Observers fear that continued violence could negatively impact voter confidence ahead of the polls.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, while police say they are collecting information and will take action based on verified evidence.
