Amid speculation over Bangladesh's possible withdrawal from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram urged Pakistan to stay focused on cricket rather than being drawn into the controversy. Reacting to rumours that Pakistan might consider a boycott in solidarity, Akram dismissed the idea outright, saying, "Why is Pakistan thinking of boycotting the T20 World Cup because Bangladesh don't want to play? What has Bangladesh ever done for Pakistan cricket? I don't see the point in this. Focus on the game and try to win the World Cup."
Akram's remarks come as Bangladesh faces growing pressure over its reluctance to play World Cup matches in India, citing concerns that have not been publicly detailed. Other cricketing voices have been less sympathetic. Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin said Bangladesh would only hurt itself by pulling out, insisting that there are no security issues in India and pointing to ongoing international matches involving teams like New Zealand and South Africa.
According to reports, the ICC is considering strict action if Bangladesh withdraws, with chairman Jay Shah expected to take a final call soon. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has acknowledged uncertainty among players about their future, urging the cricket board and stakeholders to find a compromise so the sport can continue without disruption.
